Where Federal Releases Go

The Federal Bureau of Prisons path applies when a person is convicted federally, transferred to BOP custody, or has a federal custody status that is separate from Glenn County Jail. A person can pass through the Glenn County Jail on a local arrest, warrant, writ, hold, or temporary detention event and later become a federal custody case. Once the person is in BOP custody, the county's daily booking PDFs and local jail pages cannot confirm the final federal release.

The public federal search is the BOP Inmate Locator at bop.gov/inmateloc. Research for this project notes that BOP records commonly show a federal register number, age, race, sex, custody status, location when in custody, and release date for former federal inmates. A federal release date proves the BOP custody status; it does not prove a Glenn County Jail community release unless the same person also had a local Glenn County booking and release record.

Use the Glenn County Jail record first only when there was a local custody event. The Sheriff's Office jail page at countyofglenn.net/government/departments/sheriff/jail and the arrest reports page at countyofglenn.net/government/departments/sheriff/jail/arrest-reports may identify a booking, inmate number, arresting agency, charge, warrant, or bail line. If that record says released to another agency, federal hold, federal writ, or a similar transfer, the next confirmation must come from the federal side.

How to Confirm a Federal Release

Do not use Glenn County's Recent Bookings PDFs as a federal release list. The reviewed Glenn County booking reports document intake activity and do not show release date, release time, release reason, transfer agency, or booking photographs. Use a custody-system sequence instead.

1. Confirm whether the person had a Glenn County booking. If yes, preserve the name spelling, inmate number, booking date, arresting agency, warrant details, charge, and any hold or transfer clue from the Recent Bookings PDF.
2. Check the Glenn Superior Court case search at glenn.courts.ca.gov/self-help/case-search or the court portal at portal-caglenn.tylertech.cloud for local disposition, warrant recall, bail, dismissal, sentence, or transfer context.
3. Open the BOP Inmate Locator and search by BOP register number if known. If not, search by name and use age, race, sex, or other displayed identifiers to avoid confusing people with similar names.
4. Review the public BOP result for custody location, custody status, release date, or wording showing the person is no longer in BOP custody.
5. If the person is not in BOP but the Glenn County record points to a federal hold, consider that the person may be in US Marshals pretrial custody, federal court process, or transport rather than sentenced BOP custody.

US Marshals custody can intersect with county jails through federal writs, holds, or transport. The research did not identify a general public USMS inmate locator equivalent to BOP's search for all detainees. If a local Glenn County record points to a federal hold but BOP has no result, the answer may be in federal court, defense counsel, agency contacts, or later BOP intake rather than in a county release page.

BOP Records and Contact

This is a federal prison system path, not a local Glenn County facility. There is no invented Glenn County BOP jail to call. Use Glenn County offices only for the local custody record and use BOP for sentenced federal custody. When the question is a local arrest or transfer out of the Glenn County Jail, the Sheriff's Office records route remains relevant.

For the local side of a federal transfer question, request the public booking and release record from the Sheriff's Office and include the subject's full name, date of birth if known, arrest date, booking date, inmate number, arresting agency, and the wording that suggests a federal hold or transfer. For the federal side, use the BOP locator result and any federal register number. If the person was never in BOP custody, the BOP locator may not answer a federal pretrial or USMS transport question.

About the BOP Path

The Facility Map lists "Federal Bureau of Prisons custody serving federal cases from Glenn County" as a research-only service path. No BOP institution in Glenn County was identified. The point of the page is to keep federal custody separate from county jail and CDCR custody. A Glenn County booking can be part of the story, but a BOP release record belongs to the federal prison system.

Federal custody can enter the local record through a federal prosecution, a federal warrant, a federal writ, transport, or a hold after a county arrest. The county jail record can show that the person left Glenn County custody. It cannot always show whether the person then went to US Marshals custody, federal court, BOP, ICE, another county, or another agency. That is why the release type or transfer notation matters more than a simple "not in jail" conclusion.

When a person is released from BOP, the BOP result may show a release date or a status indicating that the person is not in BOP custody. That status is federal. If the person also has a Glenn County criminal case, check the Glenn Superior Court case record for local warrants, probation, dismissed counts, bail history, or other state-court events that may continue after federal custody ends.

County Booking vs Federal Custody

Glenn County's daily Recent Bookings PDFs are county intake records. They can include agency labels, case type, bail amount, warrant number, warrant jurisdiction, warrant description, charge count, statute and section, and charge description. They do not adjudicate guilt and do not confirm final release. A federal case may not appear in those PDFs at all unless Glenn County Jail had a local custody event connected to the person.

For a released-first search, use the booking PDF for identifiers, VINE if the person is in a participating custody feed, the Sheriff's Office record for the local release or transfer event, and BOP for federal custody. If the county release was to a federal agency, do not describe it as a community release. It is a local custody exit followed by another custody system.

Federal Holds and ICE Detainers

Federal and immigration paths sometimes overlap in public questions, but they are not the same. BOP covers federal prison custody. ICE covers immigration detention. US Marshals may hold or transport people in federal court process. A Glenn County Jail record might use broad transfer language that requires follow-up. If the clue is immigration custody, use the ICE / immigration custody path. If the clue is sentenced federal prison custody, use BOP.

This distinction is important for family members trying to understand why someone is no longer in the county jail. A person can be out of Glenn County Jail and still in federal or immigration custody. The local release record answers where county custody ended; the receiving federal system answers what happened next.

The safest release answer names the custody system and record source rather than treating all releases as Glenn County Jail releases.

Public Record Boundaries

Federal, county, and court records do not show the same facts. A county booking record can show intake and local release or transfer. A BOP record can show federal custody status and release date. A state or county court record can show disposition and orders. Some details may be unavailable online because of privacy, sealed records, safety limits, juvenile restrictions, investigation concerns, or agency rules. Always verify the release with the government system that held the person at the relevant time.
